Oh, I'm sure it was just a coincidence! He was ridden in a broken bit with long shanks (like a Tom Thumb) but with no curb strap! When I asked the owner where the strap was, she didn't know she needed one! Oy -- so, he is sort of used to gaping his mouth - I'm guessing probably trying to get in a comfortable place. We have him in a plain snaffle now and he is quieting down with his mouth, but I think with horses old habits die hard and he'll probably do this for awhile. We may try something like a sidepull or a hack on him. He's not too bad, really - but I sure did catch one of his moments!
