I wish I had my trimmers. They stopped recharging. I need to buy some new ones, though, like today. I think I'll head to Big R. Any suggestions for trimmers? (Non-rechargeable) Red's wound has been a work in progress. I tried to cut the hair away from it with scissors, but I would rather shave the hair away with trimmers. It seems to have healed well in the lower layers. I think it's supposed to stay moist in this stage, but when I let it air out for just a few minutes, it dries up and doesn't look so gooey. For those of you who haven't followed this story, this is an old proud flesh wound that he banged up last week during a bad colic. It looked small at first and I didn't think much of it, but a couple of days later the skin just started peeling off around it and this was underneath! Weird!!! This is what I'm using on it every day--though today was the first time I'd let it go two days and it was still doing great. I feel like this product cleans it out but doesn't dry it up. Hopefully someone will do this for me next week. The way it's going, I may only need a couple of bandages changed--maybe one, if I'm lucky. I plan to use he product Alisa sent me yesterday to keep off the proud flesh. It's the Farnham Wonder Dust. Anyone used it before??

I've used a similar product to Wonder Dust- I forgot what is called but Big R and Aslin Finch have it. It works just like Wonder Dust, heals from the inside out.

I love my Oster clippers too - A5's, I think they are.
I've heard good things about the Wonder Dust. I have always used Schreiner's Herbal on any wounds (and we've had some nasty ones), and they heal wonderfully with just that and cold-hosing a couple of times a day. Per my vet's recommendation, I kept them wrapped for about 7 days or so, and then let them air out, wrapping every other day for a few more days, then leaving them completely open.

I typically use Schreiner's as well for most cuts, I don't know how it does with Proud Flesh though. It is a great product.

I went with some cheaper Oster clippers at Big R--mostly because I only clip bridal path, legs, and head. Hope I don't regret it, but if I do, at least it wasn't a big expense and I can always go get the A5's. I got them yesterday before this post.
I think the vet's advice was about right. I've been wrapping it every day, now it seems to be okay with every other day, and soon it'll be aired out--hopefully, by Wednesday, but I don't know. I'll have to get some of the Schreiners for the future--put it in my first aid box! I got the Wonder Dust yesterday.

The cheap Osters are HORRIBLE. I'm hoping Big R will take them back because they're not actually working. They'll work for like five seconds than freeze up. Even when they're working their hardest they still stink! That's what I get for trying to go cheap.

I need some A-5s
So, now I'm starting to wonder again about this wound. Is it a wound?? (normal wound, that is) It was proud flesh, and proud flesh is susceptible to attack and we had all that mud--could it be a skin infection that sloughed off the skin??? It's not getting bigger, but it isn't healing like I think it should either--its been 10 days. I started using the Wonder Dust tonight because it's dry and if it is a skin type of infection, dry is better. I'm going to put him on penicillin tomorrow and see what happens. He looks okay and acts okay--no temp--eats and drinks.
Any of this sound familiar?

Oh, and I'm not doing the layer of vet wrap anymore either--just the bandage and gauze. I want it to dry out but not get dirty.

Kudos to you, Flying Cowgirl, on the Wonder Dust--two thumbs up on that one. I used it last night and today was the first day I started to see a scab form! It is "Wonder" dust.
I had to give him his pen shot today since my husband who usually does it--while I hold--is gone. I HATE the feeling of needle going through hide. Hint: If you love your horse push hard the first time. Also, cc's are ml's. (Thanks, Tiki)

Does anyone know of something I could wrap the fetlock with that would still allow it to breathe AND stay dry?? Or, does he have to be in an enclosed stall for it to stay completely dry? I guess we're expecting some rain this week and weekend and I'm going to be gone. I could keep him in an enclosed stall, but the waterers are in the runs and the runs aren't covered. I could put a bucket on the stall and have them fill it. Sheesh!!! What a mess. Any ideas??
